Lunch and Milk Money
Lunches are $2.75 and will start Wednesday, August 23rd. You may pay for lunches on-line through the school website's. When sending in money for hot lunches, please place the money in an envelope labeled with your child's name on it, my name along with the date and the words "hot lunch" and put the envelope in the clear pouch in the front of your child's Agenda. Please tell your child you are sending in money for hot lunch or milk. If you choose to send in a cold lunch, we place them all in a basket that is taken down to the lunchroom. So, please label your child’s full name on the outside of their lunchbox for easy identification. Milk may be purchased for $.50.
Snack
Your child will eat snack every afternoon. Please make sure that your child comes with a small, healthy snack even if he/she is receiving a hot lunch that day. If your child forget his or her snacks, snacks will not be provided due to allergies.
Warning!!!
Important Information
When sending in snacks for your child; please do not send in any items with tree nuts and peanuts. We have students that are highly allergic to these items. If your child comes to school with a snack containing these items, they will not be allowed to eat it. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Parent Communication
A Daily Folder is sent home at the end of every day and must be returned by the student the very next morning. In this folder there may be graded assessments and informational items for parents/guardians from the school district or myself.
Your child will also receive a school Agenda. Inside the Agenda is a place for your child to record their daily behavior. The Agenda also has a section to be used as a way for parents/guardians to communicate with the teacher and the teacher to communicate with the parents. So please check the Agenda daily. If you have any questions, concerns or quick notes I need to know about such as, early dismissal, after school pick-up, after school activity, etc., please write the information on a separate piece of paper and place the note in the clear front pocket of the Agenda. I check the Daily Folder and Agenda every morning. I find this to be a quick and easy way to communicate. Please know you may also contact me at school 847-740-5320. If you do not reach me, please leave a voicemail or you can reach me via email at janinevasica@bighollow.us Often times, I will not be able to check my phone messages or emails until the end of the school day. There will be a weekly newsletter posted on this website. There is also an "Announcements" page on my website. So please check this page frequently for any important announcements or relative information. The school district has a Virtual Backpack and all district communications can be found there via the school website, www.bighollow.us. Please check my website and the school website frequently for important classroom and school information.
Star Student
Each week throughout the year we will pick a “Star Student”. During this week, your child will be treated like a “star”. This is a time for each student to share special things about themselves. Each day the Star Student will be given the opportunity to share something different with the class. When your child is chosen, they will bring home a poster to personalize and a detailed sheet the Friday before outlining what the following week will entail. This information is also available under the Star Student icon.
Birthdays
We will celebrate students' birthday with a special crown and recognition within the classroom. In conjunction with the school wellness initiative, our class will not be celebrating with food. Instead, your child is welcome to bring in non-food items to share such as small goody bags, pencils, erasers, or stickers that will be sent home. Thank you for understanding! This policy has been put in to place to increase good eating habits and to prevent issues with food allergies. You may send these items in with your child or drop them off in the office prior to 1:00 pm since our birthday recognition will take place during snack time in the afternoon.
Library
Library books are due every Monday. If your child does not bring back their book, then he/she will not be able to check out a new book until the old one has been returned. Also, please be aware that if a library book is damaged or lost compensation will be required.
Book Orders
You are able to order Scholastic books on-line every month. In First grade, your child is beginning to increase their reading skills and by ordering books you will help encourage this process. I have found these books to be less expensive than if you were to buy them at a bookstore. The classroom activation code is GLQNN. Please be aware that when you order books, not only is it helping your child to read, but we earn books for our classroom library too!
Gym Shoes
We have gym everyday first thing in the morning! It is imperative that your child has a pair of gym shoes left here at school. Please send your child with Velcro shoes if he/she is unable to tie their own shoes. As we only have a few minutes to change our shoes before and after gym; this does not leave enough time to tie the shoes of several students. Thank you for your help in this matter.
Extra Change of Clothes
Please send an extra change of clothes with your child to school. You never know what can happen! Spills can be made, water can be sat in or splashed through or mud could be run in at recess. Please send the extra change of clothes in a plastic bag labeled with your child's name on it. This will be left in a bin at the bottom of their cubbie. Please make sure these are clothes your child can wear all year no matter the weather. Thank you for your help in this matter.
Vacations
If your child is pulled out of school for a vacation, your child will receive missed work when he/she returns to school (per student handbook).
